THE PROUD TRADITION CONTINUES

The Fullerton College Art Department is one of the select few college art departments in the nation can boast of a viable and prestigious Artist in Residence program. When California artist Wayne Thiebaud helped launch the first residency in the early 1970s, the Art Department perhaps had no idea that a new chapter in its history was about to be written. Who really knew then that this “happening” would grow into the most important and defining tradition of the department? Decades later, this yearly event continues to inspire not only students and staff, but also the local Art community. We continue to welcome top-flight national and international artists who represent a wide range of styles, themes and issues in their work. The impressive list of guest artists include Miriam Schapiro, Frank Romero, Mia Tavonatti, and Gronk Nicandro, just to name a few.

The annual, four-day residency includes a series of studio demonstrations, an evening slide-lecture, and an exhibition of the artist’s work in our college gallery, all culminating with an opening reception that brings our community together.

As an instructor who has proudly helped organize some of our programs over the years, I know all-too well the rewarding feeling that comes with the annual Artist in Residence event, and the feeling is without doubt, one that is also shared by my esteemed colleagues. May this proud tradition continue to remain a viable and inspiring force as the art world itself finds new areas of exploration, and as Fullerton College begins its entry into the 21st Century.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:

Hung Liu stands as one of the most important contemporary painters from China. Born in Changchun, Manchuria and raised during some of the most tumultuous times in recent Chinese history, Liu developed a unique style that combines social realism, abstraction and photography on loose drip-stained canvases. Through her large-scale paintings, she evokes the beauty of her people, and the poetry and tragedy of her native homeland. Liu has shown her work nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions since 1978 and her pieces are part of several prestigious collections including the Library of Congress, Washington DC, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA and The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY to name a few. In 2006 she created Going Away, Coming Home, a public commission window project for Terminal 2 at Oakland International Airport in California, which consists of a 160-foot glass panel with etched imagery along the terminal walkway. Numerous catalogs and a multitude of articles have been written about her work, most recently the esteemed ArtNews ˜Critic’s Pick” (February 2010) described Liu’s work as, “focused on genuine emotion and life experiences.” Liu has been a Professor of Art, Mills College, Oakland, California since 1990. The Artist in Residence program is a continuing project coordinated by the Fullerton College Art Department originally established in 1972. Through this program world-renowned artists are invited to Fullerton College to exhibit their work in the campus art gallery and interact with students while providing insight into their various artistic careers.
